Hope Arrives: Gaza Crossing Opens πŸš€πŸ”₯

Israel announced Wednesday the permanent opening of the Zikim crossing into northern Gaza, establishing a key channel for vital humanitarian aid provided by the United Nations and other international organizations. The crossing will remain open indefinitely, mirroring the established model of the Kerem Shalom crossing into southern Gaza – the primary route for aid since the conflict began in October 2023. Israeli security checks will be in place for all aid entering Gaza through Zikim, and it will then be distributed by the UN. Despite this new access point, delivering aid to those in need remains exceptionally challenging, hampered by lengthy delays stemming from security inspections and the extensive damage to infrastructure, alongside the ongoing risk of theft. The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid recently emphasized the critical importance of this direct crossing to the north, stating that β€œthe opening of direct crossings to the north is vital to ensure that sufficient aid reaches people as soon as possible.” Prior to the opening, the World Food Programme hadn’t been able to collect cargo in north Gaza since September 12th, and the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification Initiative had previously confirmed famine conditions in the area – a claim COGAT disputed.
