Huan Huan and Yuan Zi have resided at Beauval Zoo in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher, central France, since 2012, as part of China’s “panda diplomacy” program. Two giant pandas who have lived in France since 2012 returned to China on Tuesday, having flown from Paris. The pair, aged 17 years old, were popular attractions at the zoo, drawing over 200 well-wishers to a farewell gathering on Sunday at Zoo Parc de Beauval. Originally slated to remain in France until January 2027, the decision was made to repatriate Huan Huan and Yuan Zi after Huan Huan was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Under heavy police protection, the pandas boarded a flight to Paris Charles de Gaulle airport at 12:30 pm (1130 GMT) on Tuesday, marking the start of their journey home.
