Ukrainian naval drones struck two oil tankers belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet” as they traveled through the Black Sea. Verified footage, obtained by the BBC, depicts the drones speeding towards the vessels before detonating, creating a ball of flame and billowing black smoke. The targeted tankers, identified by Turkish authorities as the Kairos and Virat and both flagged to Gambia, were attacked off the Turkish coast on Friday. The Virat was reportedly struck again on Saturday. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. These attacks represent a significant escalation by Kyiv, aimed at disrupting Russia’s oil revenues, which are a crucial source of funding for its ongoing war in Ukraine. The “shadow fleet” encompasses hundreds of tankers utilized by Russia to circumvent Western sanctions imposed following the country’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The Kairos was targeted in the southwest area of the Black Sea, while the Virat was struck further east, in a central location.
