Russian forces announced Monday that they had captured Pokrovsk, a key logistics hub in eastern Ukraine that had been under siege for nearly two years. According to a statement posted on the Kremlin’s Telegram channel, citing Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, Russian forces had also seized Vovchansk, a city in the Kharkiv region. Pokrovsk, located in the Donetsk region—one of the four regions of eastern Ukraine Russia claims to have annexed—was once home to 60,000 people and has been subjected to heavy bombardment by Russian drones, artillery, and bombs in recent weeks, resulting in widespread damage and the destruction of many buildings. Following the announcement, President Vladimir Putin congratulated Russian forces on their victory. Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is currently meeting with US and European leaders this week to discuss strategies for negotiating an end to the ongoing war.
