On Monday, the company announced that John Giannandrea, head of Apple’s AI team for the past seven years, will retire in spring 2026. During his remaining time with the technology company, Giannandrea will serve as an advisor. Replacing him as vice president of AI is Amar Subramanya, who joins Apple after most recently holding the title of corporate vice president of AI at Microsoft. Prior to Microsoft, Subramanya spent sixteen years at Google, where he served as head of engineering for the Gemini digital assistant. This move comes as Apple faces increasing criticism for lagging behind competitors in the development of AI technology. The tech giant has been scrutinized for a perceived lack of progress in integrating AI-driven features into its devices, including the iPhone, and recently delayed the release of a more advanced version of Siri until 2026.
