Turkey Shortages Prompt Retailers to Source EU Supply
Asda, Lidl, and Morrisons are taking unprecedented steps to secure Christmas meal supplies by stocking branded turkeys imported from mainland Europe. This strategic move addresses concerns about potential shortages driven by the ongoing avian flu crisis.
Avian Flu Crisis Fuels Supply Chain Concerns
A surge in avian flu cases across the UK has created a significant challenge for domestic poultry producers. With 70 confirmed cases in under three months, primarily in England, the British Poultry Council reports a substantial impact on the Christmas poultry flock.
Significant Flock Culls Highlight the Scale of the Problem
Approximately 5% of the UKβs entire Christmas poultry flock β roughly 300,000 birds β have been culled due to the outbreak. This drastic measure underscores the severity of the situation and the need for immediate action.
Retailers Adapt with EU-Sourced Options
Morrisons is currently selling Bernard Matthews-branded turkey from Poland, while Asda is offering a Cherrywood-branded turkey crown imported from mainland Europe. Lidl has confirmed that a small proportion of its branded frozen turkey, sold under the Gressingham label, originates from the EU.
Government and Industry Collaborate on Mitigation
Recognizing the challenges, Will Raw, chair of the national poultry board at the National Farmersβ Union, emphasized the collaborative efforts between government and industry. βWe have worked extensively with government to ensure not only the welfare of the birds, but also to prevent disruption to the supply chain,β Raw stated.
Focus on Quality and Traceability Remains
Raw highlighted the importance of seeking British or union jack markings, asserting that UK-produced poultry adheres to the highest standards, prioritizing bird welfare.
