Venezuela vs. US: Oil, Sanctions & War? 🇻🇪💥

US Seizure Sparks Outrage and New Venezuelan Law
The recent seizure of two Venezuelan oil tankers by US forces ignited a fierce diplomatic battle, prompting a swift and decisive response from the Venezuelan government. In a move designed to counter what they view as illegal aggression, Venezuela swiftly passed a controversial new law aimed at protecting its trade and commerce.

A Crackdown on “Illegal Acts”
This newly enacted legislation establishes a stringent legal framework, imposing substantial criminal penalties – including fines and prison sentences of up to 20 years – on individuals involved in actions deemed detrimental to Venezuela’s commercial interests. Specifically, the law criminalizes promoting, requesting, supporting, financing, or participating in “acts of piracy, blockades, or other international illegal acts” against commercial entities operating within the country.

UN Condemns US Actions as “Bullying”
The passage of the law occurred during an emergency United Nations meeting in Caracas, where China and Russia joined Venezuela in condemning the US actions as “bullying.” Ambassador Samuel Moncada forcefully argued that the US was acting “outside international law” regarding the appropriation of nearly 4 million barrels of Venezuelan oil.

US Response: Maximum Sanctions Imposed
In response to the UN condemnation, the United States announced its intention to impose sanctions “to the maximum extent possible” to limit resources available to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. US envoy Mike Waltz characterized Maduro’s ability to sell Venezuela’s oil as enabling “fraudulent claim to power and his narco-terrorist activities,” fueling the ongoing tensions.
