China’s Rising Fury: Japan’s Taiwan Visit Ignites Tensions
China is vehemently condemning Tokyo’s increasing engagement with Taiwan, viewing it as further interference in China’s internal affairs. Beijing is intensifying accusations that Japan is reverting to the militarism that fueled catastrophic conflict across the Asia-Pacific region in the early decades of the 20th century. Tensions between the two East Asian powers have risen sharply following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s statement last month, where she indicated that any “contingency” involving Taiwan would inevitably threaten Japan’s national security. China maintains that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory and that reunification, potentially through force, is inevitable.
Takaichi’s Bold Stance: Challenging Historical Outcomes
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent remarks regarding a potential military response to a Chinese attack on Taiwan have triggered a furious reaction from Beijing. China has demanded that Takaichi retract them, with a Foreign Ministry official stating that Japan is violating previous bilateral agreements concerning the “one-China” principle. The criticism coincided with editorials in state-run media accusing Japan of provocations that risk plunging the region into war, 80 years after the end of World War II. One such editorial, published by the Xinhua news agency, stated that “Japan must face up to its history of aggression, deeply reflect upon its crimes, and offer a sincere apology.”
Taiwanese Support Amidst Rising Tension
Speaking at his office in Taipei on Monday, Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te reiterated the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and expressed sincere appreciation for Japan’s support. He also voiced gratitude for Takaichi’s friendship and her support for a “free and open Indo-Pacific.” This support underscores Taiwan’s position as a key strategic partner amidst growing geopolitical tensions.
China’s Pressure Campaign Intensifies
Beyond verbal condemnations, China has been intensifying its pressure on Japan through repeated visits to the disputed Senkaku Islands, ongoing naval operations near Japanese waters, and a joint exercise involving Russian bombers simulating bombing runs. These actions demonstrate Beijing’s determination to maintain its strategic influence in the region.
A Strong Japanese Response: Defying Intimidation
Despite strained relations with Beijing, Japanese Defense Minister Kenta Takaichi proceeded with her visit to Taiwan, a move facilitated by Hagiuda, a senior member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Takaichi’s action signals a refusal to be intimidated, recognizing that China’s economic leverage is limited due to concerns about its domestic economy.
Political Calculations: China’s Strategic Patience
Shigemura believes Beijing perceives the Liberal Democratic Party as facing electoral challenges in the 2028 general election and anticipates a shift towards more centrist parties, such as the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and Komeito, which could be more receptive to China’s position. “Patience could pay off for China,” Shigemura stated, adding that Beijing hopes for a future government more willing to avoid framing Japan’s potential military intervention regarding a possible attempt to seize Taiwan as a justification for action.
