Settlement Approval Sparks International Outrage
Fourteen countries β including Britain, Canada, Denmark, and France β have strongly condemned Israelβs recent approval of nineteen new settlements in the occupied West Bank. The nations asserted that the move is illegal and poses a significant threat to the fragile Gaza ceasefire, jeopardizing βlong-term peace and security across the region.β These countries stated that Israelβs actions βviolate international lawβ and risk undermining the ongoing efforts of mediators to implement the second phase of the ceasefire, following a war in which Israeli forces have killed nearly 71,000 Palestinians.
A Collective Declaration of Condemnation
βWe, the States of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Japan, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom, condemn the approval by the Israeli security cabinet of nineteen new settlements in the occupied West Bank,β the collective statement read. The countries reaffirmed their clear opposition to any form of annexation and the expansion of settlement policies, urging Israel to reverse the decision.
Settlers Intensify Presence and Violence
As Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich stated during the announcement, "We will continue to develop, build and settle in the land of our ancestors.β According to a later note from Justice Minister Gideon Saβar, "These government decisions may seem bureaucratic, but they are, in fact, strategic in nature.β βThese groups,β she stated, βsupport increasingly ideological and, at times, more violent settlers who are solidifying their presence and expanding their control over Palestinian land, while also becoming more aggressive in their attacks against Palestinians β attacks which have reached an unprecedented scale and impact.β
