Face unlock on Android has historically faced security challenges compared to fingerprint scanning, a situation developers have been actively working to resolve. Google’s initial explorations with Soli on the Pixel 4, and the more recent reliance on the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 Pro XL, exemplify this. Huawei also investigated secure face unlock technology, incorporating dedicated ToF sensors into its phones. Now, Metalenz is introducing a significant advancement with its Polar ID technology, initially unveiled two years ago. This system utilizes a unique imaging approach, employing polarization sensing to deliver a robust face unlock. Importantly, Polar ID’s design—based on a single meta-optic lens and an infrared illuminator—enables a substantially smaller module size, a key benefit for phone manufacturers aiming to integrate the solution without creating large screen cutouts. Metalenz has recently established a partnership with Taiwanese fab UMC to commence production on a 40nm node, and CEO Rob Devlin believes the technology is poised for broad adoption in consumer electronics.
