Google is undertaking a significant shift toward integrating artificial intelligence into the shopping experience, starting with a new “AI Mode” feature within its search results. This initiative enables users to engage in conversational shopping, posing complex questions about purchases and receiving tailored suggestions, detailed tables of information, and other AI-generated content – all powered by Google’s expansive “Shopping Graph.” To further expand this capability, Google is reviving its previous Duplex project, originally designed for tasks like scheduling appointments, and now employing it to check on stock availability at stores. Users can simply invoke “Let Google Call,” and the AI will handle these inquiries on their behalf. Adding another layer to this evolving system, Google is also testing “agentic checkout.” This feature allows users to set a price threshold for a product, and Google will automatically alert them if the price drops. With authorization through Google Pay – currently available at retailers such as Chewy and Wayfair – users can then authorize an automatic purchase. Although the rollout is still in its early stages, and advertising within AI Mode is not yet widely implemented, Google is clearly placing a substantial bet on AI to streamline the holiday shopping season and, ultimately, drive greater profitability.
