Snapchat is launching a new feature, “Topic Chats,” designed to make it easy for users to participate in public conversations centered around shared interests. Initially rolling out to Canada, New Zealand, and the US over the coming weeks, these chats will appear throughout the app – frequently marked by a bright yellow “Join the Chat” button – allowing users to engage with trending topics, mirroring the functionality of platforms like TikTok and reflecting Snapchat’s recognition of the demand sparked by its popular “Spotlight” feature. To foster a safe environment, Snapchat will actively moderate Topic Chats, utilizing tools like large language models alongside its existing safeguards. Importantly, your existing profile will remain private; you can only join chats with people you already know, and you’ll be able to see when your friends are participating, with those conversations prominently displayed on your personalized Topic Chat page.
