A warning is emerging from China’s leading economic planning agency that a bubble may be forming in the country’s humanoid robotics industry. On Thursday, the National Development and Reform Commission cautioned that the sector’s rapid growth needs to be carefully balanced against the associated risks. Spokesperson Li Chaosaid that concerns are mounting over a potential bubble in the broader artificial intelligence industry. Despite a significant influx of investment, many of China’s more than 150 humanoid robotics companies – which include over half that are startups or ventures from other sectors – currently lack proven applications for their technology. This situation raises the prospect of a flood of “highly similar” models as funding for research and development diminishes.
